Chapter 10

“Violence answers nothing,” Mikhail said to a gentleman who was at the meeting as the representative of a country at the point of spiraling into secular war. “Remember that and seek other solutions to the difficult issues your perspective countries are experiencing.”

“There’s no right or wrong when it comes to religion. Only people can be right or wrong.”

He was meeting with some representatives of former Eastern Bloc countries and listening to the problems they were having trying to move their states into world contention. The difficulties they often faced stemmed from the fact that, when pushed to a breaking point, the everyday person didn’t think much beyond immediately dismantling the government by whatever means possible. Unfortunately, unresolved issues constantly cropped up with each new challenge the newly formed or reformed nation faced, and couldn’t be ignored.

Back when many of the countries represented around the table had pulled away from Russia, they hadn’t realized how dependent they were on them, and reality was starting to catch up with them. They’d managed to work through problems such as where the controls of their natural resources resided and how much the people they broke free of wanted to charge for the necessity. There were no simple solutions. Most issues had been addressed, but new ones continued to crop up, like how to survive a downturn in the international market.

The group had met up to address the economic problems they were currently facing. Mikhail knew economies around the world, no matter how strong, were suffering monumental and often unprecedented declines, but the countries with less stable finances endured the worst side effects. The vicious spiral leading closer to a serious depression hadn’t stopped although it had slowed down, and the group was trying to be proactive and look toward recovery. They wanted to know where they’d gone wrong and what they needed to do to keep it from happening again.

He wasn’t the all-knowing businessman many believed him to be, but he was interested and held knowledge of their problems. Wanting to help, he’d agreed to the informal meeting when asked and would offer guidance where he could. Because the size of the meeting was small, they were able to discuss all sorts of problems in detail, although he wasn’t entirely comfortable with where they were headed.

“Gentlemen, listen carefully. Blaming an ethnic or religious group for a nation’s problems will never work and, in fact, will ultimately cost you more than money. To follow such a route would most likely ensure your country would be locked out of the market you’re trying to be a part of and, as we’ve shown tonight, wouldn’t be enough to hold your economies together when all else fails. If you want to be a viable and respected participant in the world in which we all exist, then ditch the tattered wrap of intolerance and scapegoating. Enough of all that, let’s get back on topic. Tourism is a great market to enter, but you must…”

Mikhail trailed off as his tiger telegraphed its alarm, but the concern didn’t last long.
